So why do so many options exist seemingly complicating an otherwise simple product?

“There are number of factors to consider when selecting a strapping or banding option, including cost,” said Northrop. “The largest consideration is generally given to the tension applied to the strap and the resulting tension the strap applies to the package.”

Initial tension is not the same on all sides of a package, being highest at the point where the tension is applied and lowest on the opposite side. The loss in tension is caused by the friction encountered as the strap is pulled around the package. The
transmission of tension around the package is affected by the surface and corners.
Generally, thinner straps will transmit tension better around corners.
Some packages, such as Styrofoam, restrict the transmission of tension along the
surface of the package.

Plastic strapping can add strength to corrugated shipping containers, provides safety advantages over steel banding, and is not affected by hostile environments such as moisture.
